A rot urn issued by the Registrar-General states that the arrivals in New Zealand during tlio month of September totalled 3922, as against 2345 for the corresponding month last year. The departures were 1821, as against 1831 in September of last year.
A privn.te examination under Section 92 of tho Bankruptcy Act was held yesterday morning, before Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., of Mrs. Lily Searl, wife of Edward John Sear), until recently a restaurant-keeper. Mr. Myers appeared for the Official Assignee and Mr. Dunn for Searl.
Mr. A. D. Thomson, S.M., and chairman of the recent River Commission, proceeded to Wellington yesterday afternoon (writes our i'almorston correspondent). The commission will sit in this city to-day to draft a report on tho evidence so far adduced. It is expected that the report will take a week to prepare.
Distributions of charitable aid in tho Wellington district have not increased appreciably in the last ten years. For the year ending March, 1900, tho moneys paid amounted to £10,138 14s. 2d.; in 1904, the figures were £10,000 7s. 7d.; up to March, 1908, £10,299 12s. 5d.; and for tho present year (worked out by averaging the seven months already past), the relief given is likely to como to something near £10,392.
Tho high rents prevalent ill Wellington, and tho manner in which they press upon the poorer classes of tenantry especially, is from time to time brought under the notice of the Benevolent Trustees when a tale is told of a struggling woman, the whole of whoso earnings are consumed by rent. Under notice yesterday was a case in which the applicant stated that sho paid 17s. 6d. a week for four rooms and a scullery, in the poorest quarter of the city.
According to a circular issued to headmasters of schools by tho Wellington branch of tho Navy League, Admiral Sir Richard Poore and the Australian Squadron are expected to arrive in Wellington on November 17 (which, by a coincidence, is tho date of tho general elections). On Thursday, November 19, a welcoming function by the league will take place in the Town Hall, when speeches of welcome will be made, anrl the school children will siu^' patriotic choruses, such as "Three Cheers lor the Rod, Whito, and Blue," "Hearts of Oak," and "The British Grenadiers," under tho conductorship of Mr. F. J. Oakes.
When tho judgment summons ease Leo. Do Laval v. Edward John Searl was called on at tho Magistrate's Court yesterday morning, Dr. M'Artbur, S.M., stated that defendant had surrendered himself to the bailiff on Friday last, and had later had an interview with his Worship. His Worship said ho was prepared to hear what defendant had to say. . Mr. Toogood, who appeared for the judgment creditor, said he ilad no desire to see Searl go to gaol if ho had not got tho means to pay, but ho (counsel) would like to make some further inquiries and would ask for a further adjournment until Thursday to enable those inquiries ,to be made. The adjournment was granted. ■
Tho congregation of Brooklyn Presbyterian Church, mot last ovoning, to bid farewell to tho Rev. P. C. Itennio and his wife. The Rev. W. Sliirer presided. Mr. Rem:io is the first Presbyterian minister placed at Brooklyn, and he has had tho charge for three years. In a fow days ho leaves Wellington for the now charge'at Herbert, to which lie has just received a call. Addresses, in which adequate montion was mado .of Mr. Ronnie's good work at Brooklyn, were given by tho Revs. A, Dewdnoy and J. 11. Clark. On behalf of tho congregation and the Bible-class, Mr. D. Kennedy presented Mr. and Mrs. Rennio with a silver tea and coffee sorvice. An acceptable programme was contributed to by the following:—Mesdames Fulton and M'Olellan, and Miss Blick (songs), Messrs. Hopkirk and M'Clellan (recitations).
At a joint meeting of the Wellington Chamber of Commerce and the Wellington Industrial Association held yesterday, it was decided that the bodies mentioned should act jointly in regard to the 1 luncheou to tako place at 1 p.m. on Novembor 5 in commemoration of the openiilg of tho Main Trunk line. It was originally intended that the function was to take tho form of a dinner, but it has now been decided that it.would bo too much of a rush for everyone concerned to go direct from the dinner to tho train, so the difficulty has been got over by making it a luncheon. It is not quite certain that the train will leave Auckland after the banquet there on tho evening of November 6. The Minister lias intimated to the Chamber of Commerce that if a certain number of tho excursionists desiro to. return to Wellington that night a train will run through, but it is thought that few will care to undertake such \a long journey after tho entertainment promised them in Auckland. Tho loca.l joint committeo has • invited tho Marton, Taihape, Levin, Palmerston North, and Feilding Chambors of Commerce to send one representative eacli to the luncheon. The price of tickets Ims been fixed at 15s. ' ■
