A LOVER'S FOOLISH ACT.

. SEVERELY: ADMONISHED. (by telegeaph—press association.) " Christchurch, October 16. At the Magistrate's Court to-day a young man.named Jas. Milnes was charged with having attempted to take his own life by shooting "at Dallington on October 15 Accused came from Yorkshire, and had been in the Dominion about a year. He had attended a wedding on Tuesday, and i considered he had been slighted by a girl with whom he was in love. This so depressed him that he became melancholy. A letter addressed to the girl was found on accused, telling her of his infatuation and declaring she had broken his heart, and that he intended to kill himself. The Magistrate severely admonished the accused for his foolish act, but. considered that as accused had only inflicted a. slight wound on his arm he had not really intended to take his life, but rather, intended to frighten the girl and create a stir. The accused was a young man only twenty-one years of age, and he would not send him to gaol, but instead remand ' him for a week to the Samaritan Home, and if at the end. of that time the Court received favourable reports the accused would be discharged.
