THE UNITED STATES TEAM FOR THE DAVIS CUP. (bt TELSCRArn—ritEsf association—corrßioirr.) Now. Yorh, September 30. Beals Wright and Alexander, tho American competitors for tho Davis ,Cup, will start for Melbourne early in October. ( The. United .States team which, on its own soil, beat tho British Isles' for the preliminary tie of the Davis Cup, consisted of W. A. Larned, Boals C. Wright, and (in tho doubles) l'\ B. Alexander and H. H. Hackett. • As the latter two are the champion doubles of the United States, and as Larned is the singles champion, it will be seen that the team to play in Melbourne in November—Wright and Alexanderis considerably weaker than the original quartet; in fact, tho championship element is, in a sense, out of it, as Larned will not come, and Alexander with be without Hackett. ~ : The remaining' talent;is of'courso sufficient to put Brookes and Wilding' very much on their mettle. . Wright beat . Wilding in • tbc Davis Cup contest, in 1907, but was beaten, bj Brookes. Apropos of the change, or reduction, in the United States team, the "Sydney Morning Herald" recently , remarked that "under the regulations, an entirely different team may represent a nation in each of tho ties. This might Have a peculiar effect on' a competition. For instance, as the match is being played in America, the local team might consist of tho nation's strongest side, and defeat the British Isles. But the latter team might bo stronger than the one composed of those American players who could afford the timo to make the voyage to Australia. It is, therofore, very pleasing to know that players of the highest class will bo available for America against Australia, even though all of the four great players to do battle against the British Isles may not be available."
