NEW GOVERNOR-GENERAL
SWEARING-IN CEREMONY. (by TELEOttArn—ritEss association—copyright.) (Rec. September 9, 9.12 p.m.) Sydney, September 9. Lord Dudley, the new Governor-General of the Commonwealth, officially landed from the British flagship Powerful at noon to-day, and was sworn in in tho pavilion in the Outer Domain, recently used in connection with the American Fleet festivities. Lord Dudley was warmly welcomed by a gathering of 15,000, and by crowds lining tho streets from the pavilion to Government House. SIGNS OATH WITH AN HISTORIC PEN. Writing under date September 5, our Australian correspondent gives tho following interesting details of the swearing-in ceremony:— Tho Earl of Dudley, tho new kovernor-General of the Commonwealth, is to be sworn in at Sydney on Wednesday morning. The warship Powerful has gone to Brisbane to meet him, and there he will tranship to-day from tho Aorangi, and come on to Sydney on tho Powerful, reaohing Port Jackson on Tuesday morning. His Excellency will land at once unoffi-' cially, proceeding to Government House, where he will bo the guest of the retiring GovernorGeneral and Lady Northcoto until Wednesday morning. .Then he will re-embark on the flagship to make his official landing. He will come off in the admiral's barge, and will proceed to the Farm Cove landing-stage, through a double line of cutters, from the warships in port, tho crews of which will salute by tossing oars as tho barge passes. At the landing-stage, Lord Dudley will be met by the Federal and State Ministers, and Lord Mayor and aldermen of Sydney. An address will there be presented by the Lord Mayor. A procession will then be formed, and the Governor-General and the others will drive to tho pavilion iin the Outer Domain recently used for the recoption of the American admirals. Hero the swearing-in ceremony will take place, tho oaths of o(hce boimj administered by tho Chief Justice of tho High' Court of Australia, Sir Samuel Griffiths. For the tablo, the six-sided stone—emblematic of the six States of Australia—will be used, which was employed at the inauguration of the Commonwealth, and Lord Dudley will sign the oaths of office with the pen with which Queen Victoria signed the Australian Constitution, using also the inkstand which figured on that historic occasion. While the oaths are being signed, tho band of the Royal Australian Artil- ' lery will play the National Anthem, the guard of honour will present arms, and the warships in port will fire a salute. After the swearing -in ceremony the S recession will be again formed, and Lord ludley will drive along tho Domain Koad, past the Art Gallery, and by way of St. Mary's Gates, Queen's Square, and J'faequarie Street to Government House. This route will be decorated for tho occasion by tho Stato Government. His Excollency will leavo for Melbourne in the evening. The public bodies who wish to present addresses of welcome are to have the opportunity of doing so when lie returns to Sydney later in the month.
