(FKOM OUII SPECIAL COP.UESJONDENTS.) MARTON. Another burglary took.place at Marton at an early hour on Sunday morning, but so far as can bo ascertained the burglars got very little for their trouble. Mr. Lum Keo's shop was entered in a daring manner through a fanlight above the door. At the main entranco to the shop a small piece of glass was cut to allow the fastening to be removed, and the burglar climbed up and gained admission without disturbing anyone. After taking the precaution to open the door from tile inside he went to the till and got 6s. worth of coppers. He next helped himself to some dates and was eatiiig them when a Chinaman in the next room was disturbed, and on his coming into tho shop the thief dccani pod. It was just as well for him, because Lum Kec arrived 011 tho scene a fow seconds later with a weapon that would on application have impeded his progress. Marton Junction was also visited and the Railway Hotel and Mr. J. Kirk's tobacconist shop was entered. There seems to be nothing missing at tho hotel, but'a lot of tobacco and sundries, besides several watches, were stolen from Mr. Kirk's shop. Constables Fitzpatrick with'the assistance of detectives is investigating tho matter.

LEVIN. Notwithstanding the wet weather on Saturday thero was a good attendance of the public at tho Hui Mai-Foilding football match played at Manakau. The gamo resulted in a win for the Hui Mai team by 14 points to 8. Mr. J. C. Burns, Levin, was the referee. The Feildinr;- team of footballers that visited Manakau to play there on Saturday were well treated by the Manakau peoplo, and enjoyed a good timo. On Friday evening a danco was given for them, which proved a great success. On Saturday tho team wore driven round to see several places of interest' including the Weraroa Boys' Training Farm, and in tho evening after the match they were entertained at a dinner, when many speeches were made thanking the Manakau peoplo for their kindness. Mr. F. Pirani was in charge of the team. OTAKI. The usual monthly meeting of the Otaki Road Board was held on Saturday afternoon, when there woro present: Messrs. Tompsitt (chairman), Rollo, Meads, Jones, and Freeman. It was decided to improve the bridgo known as "Camel-back," on. the Waitohu Road," and to request a ratepayer to remove some wire which 110 had left in a dangerous place. Tho roadman was instructed to effect improvements near the Manakau School, and also, deputed to make arrangements for metalling the nowly-formed footpath on Jubilee Road. The county council's action relative to merging was severely criticised, and it was generally thought that that body should have held a public meeting instead of' lending round a petition to those most likely to sign. The Rev.' Cecil Smith, Anglican minister, took charge of the Otaki parish from Sunday, and 011, Sunday night delivered his first sermon here. It was eloouent and interesting, and tho congregation are enthusiastic oyer his 'appointment as vicar. Tho induction ceremony'will take placo to-night, when tho Ven. Archdeacon Fancourt will preside. Mrs. Jones, an' old and respccted resident of'this district for many years past, is at present seriously indisposed, and 011 Saturday an operation was considered necessary. Sho is reported to show a slight improvement. Rain that proved highly beneficial to farmers and market gardeners fell copiously 011 Saturday. A visit is expected from the Wanganui hockey girls at an early date, to play tho representatives of Otaki. SHANNON. His Excellency the Governor motored through Shannon last Friday. 'The .school closed last Friday for tho term, holidays. Tho Druids aro erecting an up-to-dato and commodious hall on the site of tho present building. Owing to the wet weather, the ride match between Shannon and To Horo had to be put off on* Saturday. Mr. I\f. .Greig,'chairman, Mr: E: J. Armstrong, secretary, and other members of the Makerua Drainago Board inspected drains at Tokomaru 011 ..Saturday. Sympathy is expressed for Mr. and Mrs.< Jas. Murray who liavo lost their twin boys. There was a good attendance in tlio Anglican Church on Sunday night when Mr.. R. Geo. Coates of the Melanesian Missionary Society gave an interesting and instructive lecture. The dry spell came to an end on Saturday, morning when' welcomo rain fell. Thero has been a splendid growth in the grass, especially in tho Moutoa district, within the last fow days. Tho prospects for tho coming season are good provided tho summer is not too dry. "■ WOODYILLE. Mr. F. Reiidle, of the local post offico staff has boon transferred to Wanganui. Tho police have arrested a stranger here 011 a chargo of indccent assault.
