CHARITY CONCERT.
IN AID OF THE HOME OP COMPASSION. No work of charity in Wellington appeals more to, tho sympathies of the public than that which is being dono by tho Rev. Mother Mary Josoph Aubcrt, who directs tho St. Joseph Homo in Buckle Street and tho Homes of Compassion at Island Bay, at which kindly hospices life is mado bright and oasy for those too broken or old to face the battle. No surer testimony to tho Rev. Mother and hor work could bo found than tho audienco which packed tho Town Hall last evening from tho organ to tho back wall, and it is fairly certain that a large sum must have been netted to help to wipo off tho deficit on the homo at Island Bay. The concert was a good one. Tho Wellington Liedert.afel, assisted by a choir of ladies, contributed six part songs in orthodox Licdertafel manner, tho most accoptablo efforts being " Matona, Lovoly Maid" (Lassus), "The Image of a Rose" (solo by Mr. J. Searlo), and "The Bells of St. Michael's Tower." Miss Lloyd Hassall sang "Love's Coronation" (Aylward) and "Happy Song" (Del Ricgo) pleasingly, and later in tho programmo selected Woodoforde Finden's "Teinplo Bells" and " Kashmiri Song," two gracefully written songlets. Miss Phocbo Parsons, Mr. E. J. Hill and Mr. C. Clarkson sang tho trio, "The Mariners" (Randcgger) without attaining the fullest musical accord, and Mrs. Mitchell and Mr. Clarkson sang Allitsen's duet "Break, Diviner Light." Miss Parson.? essayed the florid "Chanson Provencalo" (Dell' Aqua) with fair success. Miss Beatrice Richmond's pinnoforto solos —"Wander Song" and "Hunting Song" (Rlieindeggor) wero most acceptable, and, hor duet with Mrs. Cachemaillo, Chopin's delightful rondo for two pianos, was one of the most enjoyable items on tho programme. Miss Ruby Macdonald is able to induce a wonderfully strong tone of lino quality, and has emotional instincts that occasionally vibrato from her violin. Her interpretation ■of Vieuxteinps' "Reverio" was qnito good. Mrs. F. P. Wilson, Mrs. Mitchell and Mr. J. Searlo sang the trio "Ti Prego, 0 Padro Eterno" (Curschmaun), without realising the truest blend, that depends as much on tho kind as on tho class of voices so amalgamated. Mr. C. Clarkson sang a dull "Toreador's Love Song" (Courchois), and Mr. ID. J. Hill's "Still is tho Singer's Night" was welcomed, but tho audienco would have welcomed something more popular from Mr. Hill. Miss Parsons added tho bracketed "Love Me If 1 Live" and "My Love is Like a Red, Red Roso" (Foote). The accompaniments wero played by Mrs. F. D. Cachcniaillo.
