LADIES' HOCKEY.

TOURNAMENT AT DAY'S BAY. The ladies' liockey tournament was commenced at Day's Bay yesterday. Tho weather was dull arid_ threatening, and this, 110 doubt, interfered with tho attendance of tho public. A large number of the girls made tho trip across in the morning, and indulged in practico matches until tho remainder arrived in tho afternoon. Tho 1.15 and 2.30 boats woro crowded, and owing to tho sea being somewhat/choppy, several of the girls woro victims of mal-de-mer. Many complained at having to go so far to the sports grounds, but it was the most convenient arrangement that could bo made, under tho circumstances. There was somo delay in starting tho first two junior matches, but ulo seniors were got off fairly expeditiously. The arrangements wero in tho capable hands of tho secretary of tho Wellington Ladies' Hockey Association, Mr. J. D. M'lntyre, and 110 worked assiduously to promote tho success of the tournament. Taking everything into consideration, a good start was made, and given fino weather, the tournament should prove an unqualified success. There is certain to bo a largo gathering this afternoon, when Dr. A. W. Izard, president of tho association, entertains tho visitors at afternoon tea. The grounds were in perfect order, and some interesting games were witnessed. SENIOR. Yesterday's senior results are as follow: — Hawko's Bay (1) v. Canterbury (0). Chief interest was centred in the meeting of Hawko's Bay and Canterbury, a la.rgo number of spectators witnessing the game, which was played on No. 1 ground. Tho play was very fast and interesting throughHawko's Bay winning by 0110 goal to nil. Right from the bully it was evident that the Ha.wke's Bay team was the faster of tho two, and it was this that lost Canterbury the game. Tho latter's individual play at times was excellent, but when combined efforts were required they wero found wanting. The only scoro of tile game was made by Hawke's Bay, and it came after about 20 minutes' play. Up to this tho game, was slightly in Canterbury's favour. Hawke's Bay, however, proved themselves tho fresher team, and were tiring their opponents out. Seeing that the Southern girls had only arrived that morning by tho boat, this is not to bo wondered at. From a melee in the circle, Hawko's Bay made an attempt at goal, but it went behind. They wore not to bo denied, howover, and from the ensuing bully Miss Green broke, away and shot a beautiful goal, which won the game. From this out Canterbury put up a verv good fight. Many shots wero attempted, but tho Hawko's Bay goalkeeper, Miss Peterson, was sound.

Wairarapa B (1) v. Wellington A (2). Tho match between Wairarapa B and Wellington A, played on No. 2 ground, wa.s very interesting. Soon after play started, Miss K. M'lntosh drew first blood for Wellington. The whole spell was very evenly contested, Wellington having slightly tho better of it. Miss K. O'Loary and Miss 0. Richards were the leading lights fpr Wairarapa, while Misses Cox, Tavendale, M'lntosh, and Gear served Wellington loyally. Right from the bully Miss Richards evened up matters for Wairarapa, and from this out the issue was in doubt — although Wellington seemed to be wearing the opposition down — until Miss, K. M'lntosh again, sent the ball through. Tho _ whistle sounded without alteration, Wellington thus winning by 2 goals to 1. Wairarapa did not display as much combination as Wellington, but they possess some very good individual players. Both teams' halves wandered too much, but the full-baeks wero very good indeed. Wairarapa's goalkeoper saved nicely more than once. Wellington B (1) v. Nelson (1). An interesting contest took place between Wellington B and Nelson on No. 3 ground. Play started off very evenly,' and soon became fast. In the first half, Wellington played with more combination and dash, but their opponents attacked determinedly, and assailed the goal continually. The defence, however, proved sound, the goalkeeper, Miss Sunderland, saving half a dozen probable scores. Wellington attacked frequently, but they, too, could not, penetrate the defence, the defending backs, Misses Scully and Smalo, being very reliable. Wellington instituted a pretty pieco of passing, which resulted in the first score. Miss Doughty passed to Miss Tavendale, who had a shot, but it rebounded from the. goalkeeper,, and Miss Casey shot through. In the latter half, Nelson brightened considerably, and looked very much like winning. Wellington seemed to be tiring, but in spite of it the girls worked hard and prevented 'goals. By a combined piece of play Miss D. Parsonago was enabled to equalise. No further score was registered. , Miss Reevo put in excellent service as right-half 'for Wellington, and Miss Do Launay was very reliable at centre-half. Wairarapa A had a byo. JUNIOR. The following are the results of the junior matches:— Wellington A (9) v. Wanganui (0). The contest between Wellington A arid Wanganui was interesting, and more even than tho scores indicate." From tho start it was apparent that Wellington had the advantage of superior skill and combination, but they were frequently called upon to de-. fend their goal. Tho most conspicuous player for Wanganui was Miss Soler at left full-back, for without her tho winners' tally would havo been much greater. Towards the end of the game a Wanganui player was unfortunate enough to bo struck right between the eyes with the ball, and play had to bo suspended for a few minutes. • Goals wero made by Misses Polly M'Kenzio (5), Rita Johnson (3), and A. Patterson (1).

Hawke's Bay (1) v. Wellington B (2). . On No. 4 ground Wellington B defeated Hawke's Bay by 2to 1. Tho first scoro was mado by Miss S. Beech for Hawko's Bay, and tho winners' goals were notched by Misses L. Spearman and M. M'Donnell. The game was fairly fast, but from a spectacular point of view it was handicapped by a good deal of off-side play. Horowhenua nad a bye. TO-DAY'S FIXTURES.
