THE PRESIDENCY.

TAFT AND FORAKER. i —:— A PUBLIC RECONCILIATION. PLEDGE OF SUPPORT. (by telegraph—press association—copiricuit.) (Roc. September 4, 11.12 p.m.) New York] September 4. A sensation has been created owing to Mr. Taffc and Senator Foraker becoming publicly reconciled at Toledo. Senator Foraker has pledged himself to support Mr. Taft during the coming Presidential campaign, and also to speak on his behalf. Thb New York "Sun" interprets this as an admission that Senator Foraker could not otherwise bo re-elected to tho Senate.

FORAKER AND THE NEGRO VOTE. Senator J. B. Forakor (Republican, Ohio) is understood to havo the confidence of the negro voters, and he differed sharply with President Roosevelt when the President ordered the disbanding. of the negro troops in connection with the Brownsville affair. That incident has helped to set opinion against the Republicans, and similar influences have looked like driving the whole of the important negro vote to the Democrats. At a recent mass meeting of coloured men in New York a telegram i\ .j read from Professor Dubois, of Atlantic University, a leader of his race, in which he said: "If Taft beats Forakor and Hughes (for tho Republican nomination) negroes must" vote for Bryan. Avowed enemy better than false friend." At onco every negro in the hall was on his feet, cheering and shouting, "We will, wo will." At present the ultimate destination of tho negro vote and tho labour voto is the most important factor in the Presidential campaign. In his reojnciliatioa with Mr. Toft; Senator Foraker's influence will no doubt operato in the direction of bringing tho negro voter into the Republican camp. At tho Republican Convention, in the voting on the Presidential nomination, Mr. Taft was easily top of the poll, and Senator Foraker was easily bottom.
