HOCKEY

SATURDAY'S MATCHES. Tho championship hockey fixtures .wcro continued in perfect weather on Saturday afternoon. Most of tho grounds were slippery, and this interfered considerably with the play. The results lire as' follow VICTORIA COLLEGE'(4) v. WESLEY (2). An even game took place between Wesley, and Victoria.G'ollegc on No. 1 Ground. Wes-j ley got the better of the bully-off, and play was soon in College territory. The danger), howevor, was promptly averted by Beerej who carried the ball well up tho field. It was sooii apparent that the teams were evenly matched, and that tho contest would bo close. Play alternated at either end for a while, and then, after five minutes had elapsed, Beero (College) made tho first score. College again secured possession and Beero looked like scoring, but tho shot missed. Tho ground was very slippery, and this, combined with the over-anxiety of the players, caused many of the attempts'at hitting tho ball to miss. After another ton minutes' fast play, Smith (College) found' tho net. After a tussle at the Cullego posts, Dixon was enabled to securo Wesley's first , goal. During the last few minutes of tho spell Wesley Were- more frequently on tho attack, but College had the advaiitago of tho game. Play had gono twenty minutes in tho second half beforo' Keys equalised for Wesley. A little later Beero scored again for College. ' Just afterwards Beero made a pretty shot which found the net. No further scoro resulted, play remaining fast until tho finish. Mr. K. C. Morpeth was tho rcfereo. Tho College back division played very well, and their defence was very sound; their fovf wards, however, played somewhat loosely. Thoro was tod much individual play early in tho game, but the combination of both teams improved as tho match progressed. If anything, Wesley had tile advaiitago of tho combination. The £aroo was scrappy, and much of the hitting was wild. UNITED. (3) v. ViyjAN (1)- ' A desultory i match took place on No.- 1 Ground between United and Vivian. Tho play was not of a very interesting nature; Vivian having very little, combination, tho United men, as usual, shining in that ret spcct. Birkett got hit on a finger and had to take a spell for a while. United had tlii hotter of tho play, and Vivian seldom .looked really dangerous. Vivian's ■ attempts at passing rushes were .usually, prevented. be; fore they got very far. The score of. the winners would have been greater but for the good defensive work of Sanders in goalj In tho first half Elliott and Birkett 'scored; in the first, instance tho. goalkeeper leaving his place to rectify a mistake by a full? back. United's third goal was scored by Elliott after about a quarter of an hour's play. It was a high shot, and came just under tho rail. Mr. Porter refereed." j

After a struggle-at tho posts, Davies scoured tho nest, Tho next two. were mado by Putnam and Murpby. Y.M.C.A. livened up; and A: Parton scored. .Karori's fifth goal was mado by Davies after a duel with tho' defending goalkeeper, Card, who mado some excellent saves. In tho latter half, Y.M.C.A. played up very well, and would have scored moro, but their shooting was erratic. Davies added two to Karori's tally to three . put •. on- -bjf their opponents, Parton scored two' and Sims ono fqr the losers; Play was stopped on several occasions by players being injured. . D. and S., Sloano'an<l F, Thompson each scored for THoriidon in tho latter half, and Ulrich and. Birch .for-, Wellington. The play was not of a com-' bined or: scientific nature. Mr. Popo referred. Wesljiy defeated United by 2 goals to, 1; Williams and Payno scored for tho winnors, and Mill for tho losers.
