LIBERAL CANDIDATE FOR ELTHAM. ( 2 - TELEGKAm—PRESS ASSOCIATION.) Eltham, August IS. Mr. G. P. Wake, n Liberal candidate for tho Egmont scat, addressed a meeting at Eltliam last .night. He defended the "Government finance, combated tho idea that the Government was opposed to the farmers, and suggested an amendment of tho Arbitration Act by making unions deposit a sum with the Government beforo they registered, and by automatic cancellation of unions that offended. In reply to a question, ho said that ho was a prohibitionist, and favoured retention of tho present threo-lifths majority. A voto of thanks was given tho candidate.
MR. ERASER AT WAIROA. Walroa, August IS. Mr. j\. L. D. Eraser delivered a political address lnsfc ovoning to a lnrgo audience, dealing optimistically with tho progress of tho Dominion. Referring to the Wairoa County statistics for tho year lie showed that in IS9B tho valuation of tho land and improvements was £1,0-10,018 (capital value), and it was now £2,099,807; improvements increased from £759,735 to £1,51 M,430; the number of occupied holdings, 240 to 257; cattle, 69/0 to 24,930; trust lands leased to Maori Boards, 344,025 acres; lands leased by consent Maori Boards, 410,333 acres; lands in respect. to which restrictions wero removed to permit of salo, leaso, or mortgage, 410,101 acres; trust lands leased to tho East Coast Board, 63,076 ncros; lands sold to tho samo Board, about 50,000 acres; trust lands leased under Mangatu Act, 51,294 acres; Native lands purchased by tho Crown, 263,001 acres; area under complotion, 55,534 acres; takon for Crown liens, 21,791. In addition tho areas reported on by tho Nativo Land Commission havo yet to 'bo operated 011. Tho Hon. J. Carroll is putting on a largo party of-surveyors, and predicts tho coming season will bo one of activity. THE OROUA SEAT. (BT TELEGRATII.—SPECIAL CORUESrONDENT.) ' _ ~ Felldlng, August 18. Mr. Hornblow met with a good reception at Colyton last evening, when ho delivered an address, many sottlors being present. Tho meeting was sympathetic, and at its conclusion a voto of confidence in Mr. Hornblow, as tho Liberal candidate, was carried.
