MAORIS AND THE UNIVERSITY.

PROPOSED CHAIR OF POLYNESIAN ETHNOLOGY. ■ (BT TELEGRAPH—PEESS ASSOCIATION.) Cliristchurch, July 31. At the conclusion of Mr. Ngata's address on Maoris- and civilisation in Canterbury Collego Hall last evening, Mr. G. W. Russell, Chairman of the Board of Governors, said that tho Board was'taking a very active intorost at present in certain matters connected with tlie Native race, and ho ' hoped to bo able to make a definite announcement shortly regarding their operations. As the audience knew, ho was hoping to save some of the monoy at present being expended' on tho public library for the purpose of applying it for tho benefit of the museum. In anticipation of this saving being effected, a considerable amount was boing expended in the extension of tho Maori exhibit in the museum; and he hoped to be in a position to make an.' interesting announcement shortly. ; Mr. Ngata made a suggestion that a Chair of Polynesian Ethnology should bo established by tho New Zealand University. He was awaro that financial considerations had to bo looked at, but it was unfortunato that New Zcalandors should bo left iii ignorance of the grant raco that was living almost at their doors. , Tho study of the classics — Latin and Greek —was popular in the colleges, but it would be more interesting if the stud.ents from matriculation to tho B.A. degree wore allowed ,to specialise in Maori. Mr. G. W. Russell said that tho difficulty was that tlio Now Zealand University was a kind of impalpablo thing. ' If Mr. Ngata would get tho Government to endow the chair with £1000 lio felt suro that Canterbury Collego would bo prepared to provide tho necessary buildings and tako the proposal up at once. ' .'
