THE MAIN TRUNK LINE.
A TRIAL RUN., (DT TEI.EGItAPH.—SI'KCUI. COIiItivSrONDSNT.) Fellding, July 27. Residonts' of Foilding were surprised on Sunday at tho whistling of an cngino attached to a long line of carriages as it. passed through the tow'n in tho morning, returning in the afternoon. It was a trial run under the supervision of Mr. G. A. Pearson (locomotivo engineer, Wellington), and Mr. J. E. Armstrong (District Traffic Manager, Wanganui). Tile train ponsisted of fifteen carriages aggregating 240 tons weight and two engines of the W.F. type wero used. Tho train loft.Palmerston at 8.7 a.m., and readied Vi'aiouru (without stopping at Feilding) at 1.10 p.m. On tho return tho distance (OS miles) was covered in four hours, including stoppages. Tho halts wero mado for water between Marton and Taihape.. Apropos the local agitation in favour of securing a stoppage of the Main Trunk express at Feilding the Chamber of Commerce held another mooting to-day, and decided to keep a vigilant eye on the progress of events.
