, 9. Mr. P. Selig, president of the New Zealand Trotting Association, is expected to arrivo from Lytteltou by the Mararoa this morning. ; Dr. A. M'Arthur, S.M., who has been in Auckland for tho past three weeks in connection with-the settlement of' tho'tramway dispute, is due back in Wellington to-nior-roff. Mr. T. H.. Lowry, a well-known Hawke's Bay sheep farmer, has purchased tile property of about 16,500 acres, portion of Mayeo Enark, near Gilgandra, New South Wales, about 320 miles from Sydney. Included in tho passengers arriving in Wellington by the Mararoa, from Lyttelton, this morning aro the Hons. E. C. J. Stevens, C. C. Bowcn, and C. Louisson, and Messrs. T. H, Davey, G. Witty, R. H. and G. Laurenson, M.P.'s.

Major Sheets, of Montreal, who has been staying in Duiiedin for two months past, is a visitor to Wellington. While in tho southern city ho arranged a "living whist" tournament, which was a hugo- success.' Thero is a prospect of tho tournament being repeated' in Wellington, if tho Major can mako the necessary arrangements.

Mr. Alex. Ramsay, Inspector of Machinery, died at his residence, Forbury, Road, Dunedin, on Sunday night. A recurrence of malarial fever, which ho contracted many years ago whilst trading iii China waters, laid him aside on Friday of last week, and a chill developed into pneumonia! He joined the service of the Union Company in' 1887 as third engineer of tho Wairarapa, and subsequently served on tho Penguin, Waihora, Tarawora. Takapuna, Tekapo, and Taupo, and finally left the compony in January 1894. Upon settling down asharo ho took tho position 'of ' engineer in chargo of the Gore Electric Lighting. In April of. 1904, ho joined tho Government Service, and in his capacity of Inspector ho becamo well-known, and very highly rcspccted throughout Otago, being known as a thoroughly efficient and courteous officer. Mrs. Ramsay is left with a very largo family.
