. The overdraft of the general account of the: Masterton Borough Council is. £7234. The municipal gas account has a credit of £832 lis. ' Dr. J. P. Frongley, District Health Officer, is to deliver an address hero 011 Monday evening nest, in connection with tho public meeting which'is to be called with refercnco to tho now drainage loan proposals. At tho fortnightly meeting of tho Mastortou Borough Council 011 Tuesday night thero was some rather heated argument amongst the members with reference to certain works which aro now in progress. Exception was taken by Councillors, Hunter and Ewingtori to the' manner in which tho engineer, who is also the acting-town clerk, was carrying ■out tho works in hand, and Councillor Ewmgion moved ■to that effect. Tho Mayor stated that he intended to act in all technical matters : 0111 tho engineers advico. Ultimately Mr. Ewingtori's motion was defeated by six votes to four votes. . From appearances it would. seem that, owing mainly to side issues, tho Masterton Borough Council iB at present a somewhat unhappy 'municipal family.
'-. Mr. B. J. Dolan, barrister and solicitor, who is about to leave for Napier after 15 years' residenco in Mastorton, was presonted at a gathering of townsmen and friends last night with a purse of sovoroigns. Mr. C. A. Pownall occupied the chair, and paid a-high tribute to Mr. Dolan for his ability as counsel and self-sacrificing disposition in all social and public matters. Other speakers representing numerous leading sports bodies, and societies, eulogised tho recipient for his disinterested and valuablo assistance in their .affairs. Tho gathering concluded with cheers and the ?inging of "For He's a Jolly Good Follow." • . Tho price of kerosene has been advanced' locally to 10s. Gd. per fcase, a rise of practically 35,. per case since tho duty was taken off somo years ago. The reason assigned for tho advanco is the extraordinary amount of petroleum now required. for automobiles, which has,' it is allejged, produced a korosene famino on a' small scalo. Thero was no celebration of Arbor Day yesterday in Masterton. Tho Rev. J. H. Sykes, of Tenui, has been" appointed vicar of the parish of Upper. Hutt, rendored. vacant by the resignation of tho Rev. Cecil Smith. Mr. G. S. W. Dalrymplo 1 , descendent of a very ancient Scottish family, v second cousin to Earl Stair, and a forty-five years' resident of Now Zealand, is at present in a very critical condition of health, and fears 'are entertained as. to his recovery. Mr. Dalrymplo iwas born in Lorient, France) seventy years ago.; He lias resided in Masterton for tho past thirty-two years. . Mr. W. Mooro, Mayor of Carterton, is .at present soriously indisposed with an attack of pleurisy.
