CARTERTON.
At a special meeting of the Borough Council; held on Tuosday evening, Councillor W. ■T. Masson presided in the unavoidable ab!sonco of tho Mayor. The business was to consider estimates and striko' the rate for tho ensuing year. On tho casting vote of the acting-Mayor, it.was decided to continuo the Id. rats and tho water rate as at present. Considerable dissatisfaction was expressed. The next meeting of tho Council'promises to bo a lively 0110.
The Catholic concert fairly. filled tho Victoria Hall on Tuesday evening, and the entertainment providqd was most enjoyable. Tho orchestra' was under tho baton of Mr. It. Crawley; children's choruses woro conducted by Mr. W. <T. Berrill; and tho marching was controlled by Miss G. Borrill. Tho vocal numbers and orchestral selections wero from tho "Bohemian Girl." Messrs. Algie and Bonis, and Mrs. Ashton, and Miss Armstrong filled tho principal roles. 'Miss Thelma Peterson was premiere danseuse. .The gem of the evening was a gavotte, danced by two tiny tots in character, Queenio Berrill and Phyllis D'Arcy. The proceeds are in aid of the Convent Funds. ;
