Inspector Hugo delivered an interesting address to the Alasterton ,Firo Brigade and! Fire Police at tho central,fire brigade station last evening, members of the fire board being also present, 'l'ho Inspector gave valuable scientific bints as to the.,work of the brigades; and showed mentors how to render first aid and general assistance to persons injured at fires. A hearty vote of thanks and three cheers were given by the brigade as a' compliment to'the Inspector ,for.;hjs address. Cornelius Savage, poundkeeper, was'fined a nominal sum of ss. yesterday, by Mr. W. P. James, S.M., for a breach of the Impounding Act in neglecting to record in the pound book'proper descriptions of animals. A presentation was made by the choir and vestry of St.'Ma'tthew's 'Church' .last night to Mr. W. A. Fendall, a lay reader and choir member, who is'leaving-for Whangarei.. " . ■
A social gathering was tendered-last night at- the Foresters' Hall to Miss Hettic Wickens, a well-known Masterton young lady, who is shortly to be married.
The funeral of the late Robert Maunsell on Thursday was attended by well-known farmers and residents from-all; parts of tho Wairarapa, and also by employees from Maunsell's Te Nui, station," the whole gathering being testimony of the', regard .in which the old pioneer was held by his numerous friends and acquaintances. The bearers were: Messrs. W. H. Beetham, W. C. Buchanan, F, G. Moore, of Kai Iwi, Wanganui, J. G. Cruickshanlis, while last solomn services were conducted by Rev. H. Watson, of Masterton, and Rev. H. Sykes, of Te .Nui. :
