KING EDWARD. BY TELEGRAPH —PRFSS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT (Rec. Juno 29, 9.59 p.m.) London, Juno 29. King Edward and Queen Alexandra wero the guests for tho week-end of tho Earl and Countess of Pembroke, at Wilton House, Salisbury. On arriving at Salisbury, King Edward, in acknowledging an address, in which wero montioned tho King's efforts in the cause of peace, remarked:. "It is in times of peaco that tho happiness, prosperity, and progress of my people can best bo increased, and tho standard of religion and morality raised."
Tho Earl of Pembroke, a big land-owner in Wiltshire, prior to his succession to tho Peerage did considerable service in the Conservative cause in the House of Commons. Born in 1853, Lord Pembroke went to Eton and graduated at Christ College, Oxford, and is Hereditary Visitor of Jesus. Ho .took up a commission ill the Wilts Yeomanry in 187G, went into Parliament for Wilton, and got- married' to tho eldest daughter of tho second Earl ofDurham in tho following year, became a Junior Lord of the Treasury in 18SG, and Lord Steward of tho Household in 1805. His work in Parliament (lie sat for Croydon after Wilton, and until his succession 1805) included a period of service as Whip and: a turn at tho chairmanr ship of tho Kitchen Comtaitteo. Ho was very popular in the elected House; but it is said that he was much too courteous to bo a successful Whip. His heir is his elder son, Lord Herbert, born ISSO.
