A crowd forced the gaol, hung five'of the men to one tree, and shot the sixth, while ho was endeavouring to escape: "' ■ • They afterwards shot three more negroes.

NEGROES' ECONOMIC PROGRESS.! The material, condition of, the negro in ; tho United States is improving. He already pays taxes on over ,£70,000,000 worth of property. Ho owns and ocoupios 500,000 homes and farms. He controls 83 .hanks. There are 16,000 coloured ministers, 28,000 churches, and iEG.OOO.OOO worth of church property. "But is 1 the negro throughout the South," writes "Tho TimesV New York correspondent, "having a decent opportunity?" He quotes a speech by Mr. Booker Washington, to' the effect that to every pound sterling spent in the North on the education of white ohildren two shillings was spent in the South on coloured ohildren. At this rate it was impossible to educate tho children of ten millions of population to hecome useful citizens. Mr.' Booker Washington asked people not to pass judgment on the progress of the rjce based on the class of negroos found in the police courts.' Twenty yoars ago there were I! 00 lynchings in ,twelve months in tho Southern States. Last year, Mr. Booker Washington said, there were only 58 of such cases.
