CORONER'S INQUEST.

An inquest touching the death of William Hugh M'Killop, who collapsed suddenly at the Club Hotel about 0.15 a.m. on Sunday last, was held beforo Dr. W. A. M'Arthur, S.M., at tlie Morgue, yesterday afternoon. Sergeant Ke.lly appeared for the police. Evidenco was given by Mrs. Kato Jew, proprietress of Jew's Boardinghouso in Lambton Quay. Deceased had been staying at the boardinghouse since October, 1907. Ho was married, but his wife was somewhere up country. Deceased had been working up to March last. Since then he had dono 110 work, and had 110 means wherewith to pay Ins board. Witness last saw deceased on Saturday, morning,, when she suggested tbat ho should go to the Hospital, as he did not look well. Ho replied that he would do so tho following week. Deceased was of quiet habits,, and, so far as sha know, had never been the worse for liquor. Dr. Henry deposed that he was summoned: to tho Club Hotel to attend deceased shortly n ' ne o'clock. 011 Sunday morning. Killop was sitting on the couch in a dying oondition, and expired about three minutes after witness's .arrival. In tho opinion of witness death was due to cardiac syncope, but whether or not this was l the sole cause he was not prepared to say. Ho would not give a certificate of death. Henry Truman, bottler in the' Phoenix Aerated Water Company, and room-mate of deceased's at Jew's Boardinghouse, also gavo evidence.

William Hislop, barman in tlio Club Hotel, deposed that dcccasod was a v-sry moderate drinker, and had, up till March last, been omployed on the Hut-t railway duplication works. Witness noticod that M'Killop was looking ill, and t gavo .him on Tuesday last a sovereign, with which to procure some proper nourishment, telling him at tbo same time to come to tbo hotefior beef tea every morning. Deceased looked very ill on Saturday night, and on Sunday morning camo to tlio hotel in* a state of collapso, and vritivoss gave instructions for Dr. Henry ! to be summoned.

. The jury returned a verdict to the'effect that deceased died from heart.?failure, preceded by general debility, and added their appreciation of the kindness extended to deceased by Mrs. Jew, the boardinghouser kooper, and Mr. Hislop, barman at the Club Hotel.

A collision, in which damage to the amount of about £10 resulted; took place between a palace car and a cart at the bottom end of Lambton Quay yesterday morning. The cart, which _ was heavily laden'with Cases, was -attempting to procecd up the lane connected with the Singer Sowing Machine Company's premises, but tho top of the . load struck the verandah and the driver backed into a tram-car. Some of tho passengers wore standing on the footboard of the car, but they retreated promptly when they saw the cart coming towards them. The car was but slightly damaged. A single man named Harold White,, aged twenty-five, who' resides at 4. Bute Street, mot with an accident yesterday afternoon. It appears that wliilo crossinc Manners Strcot ho was run down by a cab and severely bruised. _ Ho was taken to the Hospital. His injuries are not considered very serious.

' ' • . Timaru, Juno 22. An inquest was held to-day on tho body of a young man named Charles Mann, who died suddenly on Saturday night. Medical evidence'was to the effect that death was duo to inflammation of tho brain. A verdict was returned ■ accordingly.
