N.Z EDUCATIONAL INSTITUTE.
WELLINGTON BRANCH. A meeting of tho Wellington District Institute of Teachers was held in the Teachers' Room, Education Board Building, last evening, the President (Mr. Wm. Foster) in tho chair. There was a small attendance.
A letter was received from the North Canterbury District Institute, asking for the co-operation of tho Wellington -Institute ill tho matter of teachers' superannuation. It was suggested in tho letter that offorts be mado to induco Parliament to legislate in tho direction of, granting to teachers the option of comiiig under the Public Service Superannuation scheme. ! The Chairman referred to tho probability of Parliament taking action in tho direction of introducing certain amendments to tho Teachors' Act. Tho Premier had publicly committed himself to an undertaking towards that end, and ho (tho speaker)- was of opinion that members ought to await developments. The letter was received. Tho Secretary of tho Public Schools' Amateur Athlotic Association of Now South Wales (headquarters, Sydney) wroto extending to local teachors an invitation to visit Sydney under tho auspices of New South Wales Public Schools' Association. Mr. Parkinson thought that tho matter -.vas 0110 for tho New Zealand Educational Institute; He presumed that tho invitation was extended to Now Zealand, not Wellington teachers. Mr. Fanning:' That is so. ■ It was_ decided that the letter be forwarded to the New Zealand Educational Institute. The Education Board referred to tho Institute, for consideration, certain circulars. from_ the secretary, of tho League of tho Empiro stating that facilitios would be afforded by tho municipal bodies of- tho i various centres in England, for duly accredited Now Zealand teachers to visit and study educational methods in" that country. , . _ The Chairman mentioned that the question resolved itself into tho simplo- question of furnishing New Zealand teachers, who might bo going Home on leave, with letters of introduction to the English educational authorities. Mr. Parkinson thought that a scheme providing for a teacher to oxchange positions with another 'in.sonio other portion of the Empire could ho devised: They miojht nrrango to effect a complete exchange for tho timo. being—position, houses, furniture. He thought that they might/at least, endorso soino such proposal. • Tho Chairman said that tlje matter might well be left to a futuro' meeting. Ho recommended teachers to refer to the published views of Mr. 6. Hogbon (InspectorGoneral of Schools) rogarding tho matter. Mr. Fanning pointed out. that tho Education Board had referred the matter to the Institute for consideration. He moved that it be set down for discussion at tho annual meeting of the Institute.
