A Kingston valve forming the blow-olf pipe of a marine engine was blown off tho battleship Irresistible (15,000. tons, completed in 1001 at a cost of £1,043,136) while she was lying in Portland Roads. Tho vessel began to fill rapidly, and listed dangerously to starboard. ' ■ The ongines were submerged, and the big guns uero trained to restore an even keel. Tho Channel Fleet sent divers to assist in placing the collision mats in position. Other accounts of the mishap state that tho valves used for flooding 'the magazines refused to eloso after testing exercise.
