The opening match of tho tour of tho Maori team, against New South Wales (Northern Union rules), was played in beautiful weather. .The team proved a great attraction, and tho attendanco was 2-5,000. • Considering their short acquaintance with the new Rugby, the visitors gave a good account of themselves. Play was lively, but of a somewhat scrambling character. _ • 'In tho first half Pouwhiu scorcd the only try scoured by the Maoris, tho spell,ending: Now South Wales 7, Maoris,3. In tho second half Hotaua Witeriua placed two tries to tho credit of tho visitors. Tuki's shots at goal were ineffectual. For New South Wales tries wero obtained, by M'Cabo, Messenger, Bailey, and Storey. Tho final scores were: No-.v South Wales ... ... ... 18 Maoris ... 8
