FARMERS' UNIONS IN SOUTH WAIRARAPA.

TO CONCENTRATE AT' CARTERTON. A meeting of the Carterton district-mem-bers of the JN'ew Zealand Farmers' Union was held at Carterton on Saturday afternoon (writes our Wairarapa correspondent). There was a fairly largo attendance, Mr. H. M'Phee occupied the chair in the unavoidable absence of Mr. H. R. Bunny. ■ r Mr. J. C. Fowler, the organising secretary of the union, addressed tho meeting'at some length, on the lines' of his previous address at Masterton. He detailed the . proposal for organising tho various district branches into one council. This was being done with considerable success in various portions : of- the North Island, and lie was of opinion that if the system wero adopted in South Wairarapa it would be more eminently successful than the present method, which did'not permit enough of district centralisation. The Branches Concerned, i ■The following were tho district, branches which it was proposed to amalgamate .in one central bodyGreytown, Carterton, Dalefield, Tarataki, and Parkvale., . Mr. Fowler said that ho had obtained fully 70 additional names of farmers in the district who were willing to become members. Y/hat the Union has Done. Mr. Fowler, referred to the manner in which the union had helped the farmers, andmade special .reference to tho abolition of tho sheep tax, tho' decrease in the' insurance rate, the'bheaper purchase .of goods, and the general advancement in agricultural' science. Touching briefly on the position which'outproduce hold in the', markets of world, Mr. Fowler said'that'it should not be forgotten that' this position was in , a great measure due to the efforts of those who'had money to spare 1 in perfecting' their breeds of stock. In. many; instances, these'people were wealthy landowners, who had laboured hard for many years before they became in any deg'reo affluent. Had, it riot been for theso;,people, and what they were now.: doing,' our produco would riot be in its present enviable position." ' ' , Proposal Carried; ' ... , 0n the motion of Mr. A. Booth, seconded by Mr. C. Jury, it was decided unanimously that tho branches ' around Carterton be .merged into a district branch, with headquarters, at;.Carterton. ' * , ; Tho following officers were then elected as an-executive: —President, Mr.' H. R. Bunny; vice-president, Mr. C. Jury; general committeo, Messrs. G. Stevens and E. Eagle, junr. (Belvedere), C. Fairbrother.and R. G. Welch (Dalefield),' W;. Fisher, R. M'Laren, arid A. Booth (Taratahi), W. Howard Bootlr (Carterton), L., Nix and W. J. Donby. (Parkvale),,W. Knapp and H. Morison (Greytown). . Mr. J/ B. Bairstow was secretary.
