NATIONAL DAIRY ASSOCIATION.
-THE ANNUAL REPORT. ' ' ' ■ The fourteenth annual'report of the National Dairy Association, to bo presented at the. annual meeting at Palmerston North during the dairy show- this month, touches on some interesting "points. ■ It states', that • tho .Association's turnover for the 'year .was' £89,627 lis. 2d.,- and the profit £356 9s.' ,6d._ The members' subscriptions were' £555, subsidy- £145, and commissions '£195M65. .lOd. . The{membership increased from 94: to. 109. Two factories' retired during the, year, but against this 9 co-op'era-tive,' 2. proprietary, and 6 exporting companies jollied. , A Warning About Gheeso. . ; After saying that tho complaints as'. to : the' quality ' of"butter ihadi'been: fewer than usual, the' ; repqrt'sayS ! concerning cheese:—l " .Unfortunately. complaints have been frequent in the Plome market as to quality." This may be'attributed, probably, to soimany, factories turning from butter' to chedse,' andconsequent lack of experience in manufac-i turing the quality of' milk, and the shipping of cheese before it has matured sufficiently. The latter is a mistake, and'factories continuing to make cheese should see that it is' not shipped before it is ''at least twentyone'days old.. The shipment of cheese' ftom eight to ten 'days' old, 'to be retained for a period' of six: ' weeks in a temperature ranging from 45 to 50 degrees, •mußt. detri-' monthly. affect i@ quality" ,
Steamer. Accommodation. '.'Concerning' the accommodation on tho .'steamers, the report says:—"During' the year no butter ,has been short-shipped. With regard to cheese; however, 1 the case has been different.' On!three..occasions the' quantity offering was in excess of the Vapaqity of tho cheese, chambers. It would greatiy'.facijitate the . providing of the necessary space' if our members gave more attention to this important matter by advising an early esti- • mate of the quantity .coming forward: Frequently : those responsible , for reserving space, have to estimate four weeks in advance of tho steamer's departure—sometimes without reliable data—the total quantity tc be shipped." Legislative Matters The .report alludes'to the decision to erect'a Government .Dairy School on part of the'.Manawatu showground; the passage 'of- the Co-operative Dairy Companies'. Act.. 1907, giving. increased' powers;; the 'formation of industrial unions ' of dairy factory workers, and subsequent citations;, and tht need of amending the arbitration law,, so that at least half (instead of only seven) ol the porkers in 'an" industry muse be mem-' bers of a union before it can issue , demands. Other Matters'. .iltegret. is expressed at the death of the late Mr. Thomas Langdon Joll,'-a former . 1 director, and high appreciation of ; his past services. " ' The retiring directors are Messrs. A. Macifarlane and W. Fisher; and hp. Joll's death causes an, additional vacancy.
