WHERE DAIRY COWS ARE CHEAP.
One of the . first dairy stock > sales -of this season was held in the Hukanui district the other day:(writes ; our Wairarapa correspondent). There were, about thirty cows sub-, mitted, and, assuming- that the, bids wero genuine, the prices averaged £3 13s. 6d. per head. The cows were in rather poor, condition. but their tests at the Ballance Dairy Factory, wero said to .have averaged from 3.8 in October to 6 in May. The highest price obtained was £5, and tho lowest £2. Farmers who were present at tho eale stated that tho onlj thing which prevented them 'from 'buying was (the fact that' they could ..not afford the feed' during the close season. In the hilly district at the west of Hukanui, the pastures arc not looking too flourishing, and farmers are paying as muih as Is. 3d. por head per week for grazing stock. It is generally considered that-it will not lo wiso for dairy farmers to dispose of their herds for the next month or six weeks. .
