LEVIN.
BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. The usual fortnightly meeting of tho Borough Council was held in tho Council Chambers on Monday,'night. There were present: The Mayor (Mr. B. It'.' Gardener), and Councillors Mackenzie, Hall, Williams, Prouse, Levy, Douglas, Ryder, Hankins, and Hudson. ' Before the ordinary business was gone on with, tho Council sat as the Domain Board, arid were waitod on by Mr. Horace Gold- ; smith, representing tho Horowhcnua Rugby Union, who asked that the proposed charge of £10 for tho use :of Levin Park; bo reduced. Consideration of the ihatter was deferred until next meeting. The Council then - commenced the busi--; ness of the evening. The-Mayor was appointed to represent tho Council-at the Foxton Harbour meeting, to be held in Palmertson on June 4, The report of tho Lands Purchasing Committee, which recommended tho purchase of a further block of 400 acres at £1 7s. per acre, in connection with the catchment area of tho ! waterworks scheme, was read and adopted-. Accounts amounting to £262 13s. sd. were passed for payment. . It was decided to call a public meting to discuss tho advisability of changing the name of Woraroa to Levin. South. A letter received from tho Wellington and • Manawatu Railway Co. offering the Council the gravel pit close to the railway station •for a sum of £650, was a matter that brought forth plenty of discussion. It was . shown that the pit; had an area of 6"i acres, and would be, very valuable if filled u^.to tho, ileyel of -the surrounding land; but then, after a few calculations, it .was found that, this would cost between £50,000 and £60,000. As. the Council did not feel inclined to raiso, £650 for the purpose, the matter was allowed to. drop. ....... Heavy showers fell throughout Monday night, and, yesterday was showery and overcast. i A. rather sharp shook of earthquake was folt in Levin at about 10 o'clock on Sunday iriorning. , [A number of Shannon farmers were in Lovin. yesterday, making their, annual visit to tho Experimental Farm.
