Mr. Hornblow, one of the candidates for the Oroua scat, addressed a crowded meoting at Kimboltoil last evening, and was accorded an enthusiastic reception.' .'.At the Magistrate's Court a local resident obtained'judgment for £15, damages from \V. H. Overton, licensee of the Princoss .Hotel, Torraco End, for assault. Thorn was a fino attendance at the Opera Houso last night for the orchestral concert. Among thoso who gavo item's were Messrs. F. 'It. 'Johnstone, or' Wellington C'collo), P. Somcrvillo'Brown (violin), and 6. W. Wright '(vocalist), and Mrs. •A. H. Bath sang two •songs. The concert was the ino* successful yet given by the society. . At the Magistrate's Court yesterday, Mr. Overton, liccnoee of the Princess Hotel, Terrace End, was-proceeded against by a local . resident for assault. Judgment was given for plaintiff for £15 and costs. , At' the Magistrate's Court a discharged waiter claimed £3 from Martin Crcaven, proprietor, of tho Grand, Hotel, for' alleged wrongful dismissal. Judgment was for plaintiff for the .amount claimed. A meeting of thoso interested ill theformation of a Hunt Club, will bo held to-morrow. Over 100 members havo joined the liewlyformod Horticultural Society. A general ineoting will bo held next week.

Mr. Joseph l)ixon, a well-known resident, who has made.a hobby of performing poultry, created'a mild sensation yosterday morning by < an-exhibition' of his pets riding a tight rope in a vehicle which was driven round tho town at a fairly rapid pace. _ A distance of two .miles was covered,' which Mr. Dixon claims is a world's record. • ' . This road would be of great benefit to the'settlors on the proposed route and to Shannon. It would very considerably shorten the journey to Levin. GREYTOWN. BOROUGH COUNCIL MEETING. The, Croytown Borough Council met on Monday evening. A letter was received from Messrs. Varnham and Rose regarding-their fees for tho new hall. They declined to reduce thorn,'but offered to make a donation Of £20 towards the hall fund. Tho offer was accepted. Inspector Miller reported that pigs were being kept within the prohibited area; and tho matter was referred to the borough solicitor. Messrs. Mark Maxton and Co. wrote offoriiig to supply carbido in lots of one tailor more. I'lio offer wad accepted. The manager of the Bank of New Zealand .wrote informing the Council- that the bank agroed to tho usual overdraft up to £i2OO. Three of tho Councillors resigned for reasons not explained. The Hinemoa Juvenile (Native) Co. wrote asking |for remission . of a portion of tho charge for hall hire. It was" decided that tho Council'could no); do. that, but would •make; tho Company a donation of £1. .. Inspector Millor raported that ho now had a copy of the new model by-laws, and wished to meet the committee set np to deal with the question. The matter was arranged. A letter from the same officer regarding an [ insanitary house was reocived.
Accounts' amounting to £80 7s.' lid., were passed for payment. The debit balanco at the-bank is £894 2s. lOd. Tho receipts during the month from tho Town Hall wero £27 10s. Tho Works I Committee . reported _ doing a quantity of metalling, and asked that Mr. J. Terry, bo requested to 'put 'his fenco on tho right lino. Mr. T. M. Drummond, surveyor, forwarded a plan of tho Kaitara Road, bearing on tho same subject. Tie Lighting Committeo reported setting up threo extra' .lights' in the streets. The .Council objected to the committee doing this without authorisation, and tho matter was "referred back." Consequent on tho new elections, now committees were set up for Finance and Works,' Cemetery, and Lighting. Tho earthquake reported in Tun Dominion Was felt here on Sunday' morning .at 9.53 o'clock.
