GARRISON OFFICERS' CLUB.
ANNUAL MEETING. Tho annual meeting of tho AYellington Garrison Officers' Club was held last nightin the rooms at the new Garrison Hall, in Buckle Street. Colonel Robin, C.8., Chief of the General Staff, presided, and there were also present Colonels AVebb, Collins, and Gilruth, Lieut.-Cols. Campbell and Dutliie, atid G5 other officers. The report, which has been published in Tee Dominion, was adopted,'and the club's financial positioa \Ns favourably commented upon. ' The chairman, in a short 'speech, alluded to the great usefulness of the club, botli from a social and military point of view, and pointed out that it took tho place of the officers' mess in the regular army.' Tho following office-bearers were elected for the ensuing year:—President, 'Col. Robin, C.B. (Chief of tho General Staff); vice-presidents, Cols. Davies, AVebb,' Collins, and Tuson (members of the Defeiico Committee), Lieut.-Col. Cf.mpbell, Lieut.-Col. Duthio, Surgeon-General the Hon. N. E. Collins, Col. Gilruth; general committee, Majors Hume and Mackintosh, SurgeonMajor Purdy, Captains Courtney, Menzies, Mabin, Corrigan, and Samuel; secretary, Lieut. Hutcbin; treasurer, Capt. Henderson; librarian ; Captain O'Sullivan; auditor, Captain Dutliie; assistant secretary, Lieut. Collins. It was decided that tho officers' annual ball should bo held in the hall as soon as convenient after the official opening, which will take nlaco on Juno 3 with a military -parade. 'l'ho arrangements for the ball were placed in the hands of the general committee, -vyith power to add to its number. .. v
A vote of thanks was passed tq Captain Mabin for his indefatigable services as secretary during the last five years. It was also' G' lted 4ont that the existence of the now was largely due to the efforts of Colonel Collins.
It was resolved to have tho officers' rooms at tho hall connectod with tho tolenhono exchange. A fund was opened for furnishing the rooms, Major Hisbp and Captain Morton contributing £0 ss. each, and several other officers £1 Is. each.
What ought never to ho overlooked is tho inQuence women might have in preventing tho drift of men from villages to tho towns. If .voiing women wore induced to remain in the country by having their social surroundings made more attractive, miich would doubtless be done to mitigato tho desertion of rural EnjrloncL—'' .Weekly Dispatch."-
