WAGES DISPUTE AT BURNSIDE.
.' FIFTEEN MEN PAID OFF. (dt telegraph.—special correspondent.) 1 Dunedin, May 12. There was another labour disnuto at the Burnside Freezing Works to-day, tho result being that about fifteen slaughterhouse assistants were paid olf. It appears that last woclc tho "chamber hands," knowing that thero was some dissatisfaction among tho slaughterhouse assistants over their rate of wagos, induced,them to join■ forces with themselves, -and endeavour to get higher wages for both classes of work. ,Tho chamber hands wore successful on Saturday in getting the 15..3d. por hour thoy stood out for. The slaughterhouse assistants, who sought'a rise from 11 Jd. an hour to Is., were less fdrtiinate. They complain that cliey wore'deserted by the chamber hands, who, having got their own domand complied with, ceased to take any interest in furthering thoso of thoir allies, as they had promised to do. The slaughterhouse assistants coased work on .Saturday, but a mediator appeared yesterday, in the person of an inspector ,of tho Labour, Department, who undertook to find out what wages were paid at Gisbornc, Wellington, Islington (Christchurch), and Smithficld (Timaru).
