AVliite, .of the Hclensville Post Office, and Mr. N. Kay, of Mount Roskill, were cantering on horseback, when a trap, occupied by Messrs. M'Adain and Hart, cr.mo in tlio opposite direction; Tlio shaft of the vehicle penetrated tho side of the first-named lad, and as he was badly injure:!, ho was immediately driven back to Helensvillc. /White died early this morning. An inquest was held to-day, and a verdict of accidental death was brought in. SUDDEN DEATH OF AN ENGINEER, Auckland, April 21. ■ Mr. Hastilow, chief engineer of the Victoria, who died in tho hospital to-day, visited the races at Ellerslio on Monday, with tho chief steward, and returned to tho ship apparently in good health. Ho was found in tho cabin in a dying condition during tho night, and modical aid was summoned. Ho was afterwards removed to the hospital, but died without regaining consciousness at 4 p.m. to-day. • The captain of tho Victoria was taken ill about tlio sanio time, but recovered. Death is believed to bo duo to blood poisoning, but how caused is not yet known. An inquest will be held. YOUNG MAN'S TRAGIC DEATH. Mastsrton, April 21. Late last evening Edward T. Meredith, son of tho late Mr. Richard Meredith, formerly of Lansdowne, and grandson of tho late.Mr. Edwin Meredith, of Upper Plain, mot his death in a tragic manner at the .residence of Mrs. Edwin Meredith, Upper Plain.' Deceased was nineteen years of age, and had spent the evening with Dr. and Mrs. Dawson and Miss Meredith! Ho was apparently in perfcct health and'high spirits.
