LAWN TENNIS. BROUGHAM HILL TOURNAMENT. MISS NUNNELEY DEFEATED. ■Tho.'outstanding feature of the Brougham Hill Lawn Tennis Club's Easter Tournament, which was continued yesterday, was the defeat of Miss Nutinclo.y, tlio ladies' champion of Now Zealand, by Miss Wellwcod, of' Hastings, in the final for the Ladies' Championship Singles.' Miss Wcllwood, who comes of a'rioted athletic family, played a first-class gaino, and won' by her well-thought-out placing, vdiich tired out her opponent, who was compelled, to keep moving -from corner to corner. Miss Wcllwood's was' a fino exhibition of tennis; and she well-deserved to win r although Miss Nunneley was not by any means in her usual form, and was tired, having played just previously, but Miss Wollwood had also been playing just before. Had Miss Nunneley been showing up to standard, she might havo won tho match, although Miss Wellwood had played better during the day. Miss Nunneley, who has been New Zealand ladies' champion for fourteen years, still holds that honour, as she was not defeated at a New Zealand championship meeting) but the fact remains that she has actually been beaten. Tho same applies , to her defeat by a lady from New South Wales, at New Plymouth. . The playing cf Misses R. and L. K. Hughes, of Pahiatua, is also worthy of mention, and. it was unfortunate that Miss R. Hughes was'ill yesterday, and had to default in the Ladies' Championship Doubles. .The Club has been very unfortunate in the matter of weather, for thero aro about twenty games yet to play.
