One evidence of the hold which tho Mayoral election- is already taking upon public at-, tention.is to bo found in tho activity that is being shown in tho enrolling of. electors, j Application forms, ,which are obtainable at the Town Clerk's office, have been handed out to numerous inquirers, and have been coming back filled in, signed, and; witnessed.- The roll, accordingly, is growing every day. Tho process of getting on tho roll is -not beset with unnecessary red tape, and the franchise is a broad one. Roughly speaking, every ; property - owner, every tenant, every .householder) and, every householder's wife navo a voice in .tho choosing of a Mayor, and nobody has more than one vote. Anyone over 21 years of age may be on the list and vote if'ho possesses any of the following qualifications:— (a) Freehold qualification, i.e., being , tho owner of at least £25 worth of land ■in tho city.. i. . •• (b) Rating, qualification, meaning that his namo appears in tho " Occupiers" column of th'o valuation roll in Tospect of any rateable property in the city. ' (c) Residential qualification, which consists in; occupying as tenant tho whole or part of any house, warehouse, office, shop, br othor building at a rent of. not loss than £10 a year. Any of the above qualifications possessed by a husband is deemed to be also possessed by his wife, and' vioe versa. Any objections to the electors' list , should bo lodged at the municipal officos. The roll cannot be altered after 5 p.m. on the fourteenth day preceding tho date of the election, i.e., on Wednesday, April IS.
