TRAGEDY AT TAONUI.
SUICIDE BY DYNAMITE. Taonui, about three miles from Feilding, was. the scene of a ghastly tragedy yesterday morning. , ~ . . At about G. 30 a.m. an explosion was heard in tho vicinity of ! a two-roomed wliare, owned by tho, Government, and known as " Jones's wharo." Subsequent' investigations revealed the f»ot that a fatality of a particularly horrifying naturo-had occurred. The chimney of the wlmre was wrecked, and tho Whole interior of the structure was a shamblos, tho "body of a man boing found among the wreckage. . Constables Edo and Swqenoy at once proceeded to the scono pf tho' tragedy, wTion an examination of tho body took place. In the clothing of the man were found several letters and' a diary for 1008.
From tho contents of the correspondence it was shown tliat tbo victim was Frederick Hasso, of Taonui, who had been for tho past two years employed on fencing contracts by Messrs. Bailey Bros, at Kawatau. Deceased left their omployinent on Friday last, giving no reason, and sinco then nothing had been heard of him.'
it was afterwards discovered that Hasse had purchased a coil of dynamite fuse and some dynamite at Darragh's store, and whilo there appeared to bo quite oheorful. Tlio tonor of tlio documents found on tlio body, however, indicated that, deceased contemplated suicide. Hasso had tlio reputation of being a quiot, hard-working omployeo.
