CARTERTON.

The usual meeting of the Borongh Council last night- (Tuesday) wag. remarkable for the celerity with which the agenda'paper was dealt .with. The finance committee's report, showing a credit balance, was received. Tho gas committee's, showing 159-consumers,.and more to come,, was passed. The sanitary inspector's report disclosed tho disappearance of infectious diseases; and the Council then settled down to more personal business. Applications for two-new streets, and the Firo Brigado's application for a water, meter, to bejilaccd in the station were handed over'to the works' committee, with, power to act. Tho, request from the Hockey Club' to plough a portion of Carringt-ou Park was handed to tlie Domain Committee, and tho Council- adjourned after eight' minutes' toil. ■Thoro was. a full 'muster of the, Carterton Rifles under Captain Skey last evening, Staff-Sergeant M'Nair being present, and delivering an instructive lecture on "Scouting." Captains Cameron and M'Killop, of tho ilasterton Mounted Rifles, wero also present in mufti. The arms and accoutrements for the corps have arrived, and will he distributed at noxt parade. Mr. D. T. King is pushing on with the range at.Belvedere, and with tho early arrival of the uniforms this latest addition -to His Majesty's' Imperial Forces should give a good account of itself.
