Ctroh oto special correspondent.) ,; Blackbirds and thrushes are very plontiful over the whole of the district, and farmers - owning orchards are anticipating a troublous time from the ravages of the pests. / Mr. A. Gallon, of Matarawa, who grows potato crops each season, has not oeon troubled with tho blight for, three years, ne states that ho makes it a rule each year, about the third week in December, to cut off the tops of the crop, and sprinkle the rows with lime. , .. It is reported that with the opening up of ,the roads in the direction of Waipukurau, the Wellington meat companies are operating .largely in the Hawke's Jky district. Tho drain on the country districts for sheep is now nearing its height, thousands of animals being railed every day. , Farmers with/ late crops \ state that oney can stand-another fortnight's dry weather, although rain would be :very welcome now. Early crops are looking very well in tho Matarawa district, b'ut it appears tha,t rain -. falls there-more • often ! than in any other portion of the Wairarapa: '
