PETONE BOROUGH COUNCIL.

Tho fortnightly meeting of the Petono Borough Council was held last night. There wore present tho Mayor (Mr. J. 11. M'Ewen), and Councillors Cole, Nicholson, Harding, Smith, Loddor, Southgato, Castle, and Colquhoun.

Messrs. Wilford and Lovi wrote with regard to the Ilutt Park Act and tho appointment of a joiut committee by each borough. On tho Mayor's motion it was resolved that Councillors Nicholson, Cole, and the Mayor bo appointed a Committee to deal with the matter. / The District Roads Engineer wrote stating that tho Government would contribute .6100 towards the draining of tho land north of the stop bank. A letter was received from Messrs. Bunny, Rawson, and Pothorick, solicitors to tho Hu'tt River Board, in connection with tho proposed new bridge across tho river. It was stated that if tho bridge were erected on the direct route, tho Board would claim J1750 as compensation, and J2500 if it was erected on tl>e alternativo route. The Board would also require that plans bo submitted for the approval of its engineer, and Hint tho work bo carried out to tho engineer's satisfaction. Tho Mayor moved, and Councillor Colquhoun seconded, that tho lotter bo received. An amendment, proposed by Councillor Castle, and seconded by Councillor Smith, that tht> letter bo referred back to the Hoard for modification, waj lost, and tho original motion carried. Tho City Council wrote referring to the Ilutt Bridge draft of agreement, and asking that it should b« returned with tho il'otone Council's approval. The letter was not officially recoived. The City Council also wrote with regard to the cost of the proposed bridge —.£12,500 for tho Jackson Street route, and .£11,500 for tho alternative route—an:l enclosed (i plan of tho oußgested deviation of tho watermains. The letter was received.
