The result of his efforts was shown in an amendment to tho Shops and Offices Act, securing to them the . much-needed weekly half-holdiday. On bohalf of his fellow-unionists ho handed Mr. Carey a presentation gold 'watch, inscribed "To E. J. Carey, from friends and members of the Cobles' and Waiters' Union, December, 1907." Accompanying tho watch was an illuminated address, \wliich sot forth the acknowledgements of' tho Union for its secretary's efforts on its behalf. Mr. Carey, in reply, said that the greater part of the credit belonged to the Union, not to himself. Their cuccess in'obtaining the concessions asked for was n splendid tribnto to organised labour. By uniting their forces they had secured better conditions of labour, and they could now see tho advantages , of a strong Union.
