THE NELSON SHOW.
. A MOST SUCCESSFUL EXHIBITION. The fifteenth annual show of tho Nelson A. ii t ' ■£ ssoc ' a t ; ion was held at Richmond i ark on Tuesday and Wednesday last. .Perfect Nelson weather prevailed oil both days, and on Wednesday afternoon, when tho number of visitors was greatest, the heat was tempered by a light breeze. The Society had invited the Hon. R., M'Nab-to open tho show, hut he was prevented from being present, and telegraphed expressing his regret, and hoping that the exhibition might he u/> to the standard of former years. This wish was more than fulfilled. Although the total ontries were less in number than those of .ast year, there was a very distinct advance in thi* more important classes, particularly in horses and sheep. The visiting judges expressed the highest opinion of the exhibits in these classes, and one who had previously judged the horseswwats t particularly pleased at the advance made since his provious visit to the district. The pigs shown were less numerous than formerly, but the specimens were particularly line. Perhaps the finest display made in the whole show was that in the tent set apart for domestic This has always been a strong feature of Nelson shows,, and it is open to question whether some of the exhibits of preserved fruit, pickles, and jams could be surpassed an.ywhere in the Dominion. Jhe examples of -home baking - and - dairy .butter were also particularly good. The number of exhibits was so large, and the quality, so high, that the judging of this section must have been a matter of particular difficulty. Wednesday, being "People's Day," was observed as a close holiday in tho city, and the number attending the show was very largo. No official statement is. yet available, but, judging by appearances, the crowd was pro : bably a record".one. Side shows were more than usually numerous, and all seemed to be P atron^s 9 ( l } while there were the usual stands.of business firms, the most important being those of Messrs. W'ilkins and Field, ■w E., M'Person and Co., . R. May, and S. Winn. A large number of agricultural implements and. cycles wore shown. In the afternoon the usual driving and jumping contests were judged. The ood-chopping and sawing competitions were hardly as interesting as usual, owing to the smaller number of entries, but tho displav of bush-craft was sufficiently striking.. There was the usual parade of hor'sesj vehicles, and motor-cars. A fat bollock purchased in the South by Mr. F. W. Pairey was exhibited. This Huge . animal weighs no less than 23cwt., and is claimed to bo the heaviest in the Dominion. It • appeared . monstrous beside the. largest bulls exhibited in the various classes. Another feature was* a horse, the property of Air. McN. Campbell. /Tho old stager, which is a grey, and rojoices in the name of " Paddy," has far outlived the ordinary span of horse life ; He has reached his forty-first year, and his legs are cleap-.and sound and his tooth good. As ho appeared at tho show ho seemed.good to live for another decade. On the whole, the Association are to bo heartily'congratulated, on a most successful exhibition. Tho exhibits were thoroughly representative of the, district, and spoko volumes for the progress which is being mado by the farmers of tho province.
