Tho New Zealand Official Year Boole for 1907, which'has just been published, contains as usual, a mass of information—official, statistical, and special. The new customs tariff is given as an appendix, and, by way of inset, some of. tho leading features of the new Land tho Incomo Assessment Act, with tho sealo of graduated land tax.. The now. special articles includo ah account of tho recent-ex-hibition, an analysis of Maori population re; turns, an article by Mr. Elsdon Best entitled "The Ancient Maori: his amusements, iraines etc.," and a tangi, given both in English and Maori,, which was chanted by tho Hon. J. Carroll at the Maori ceremony in connection with tho lato Premier's funeral. It is unfortunate that no notice is taken, even in the addenda ot corrigenda list) of the important changes in tho Labour' Department, made'in tho first week of October, consequent upon the death of Mr. James Mackay, who is still given as Chief Inspector of Factories arid Deputy Registrar of Industrial Unions. It would also facilitate reference if the official list of Departmental officers was arranged in some intelligible sequence. Even persons who had learned approximately by long acquaintance the arrangement of tho 1900 list will bo astray in this new volume, in wljich tho order is quito different.
In our auction columns Messrs. Harcourt and Co. recommend the purchase of Marton Ivttension sections at the sale on December li. The land lies between the railway station of Marton Junction nnd the town of Marton. T.'io auctioneers draw attention to the fact Hat within the boundaries of the borough of Matton are the majority of tho sections of Marton Extension. Marton is the centre of a prosperous district, destined to bocome a large distributing centre, as well as a railway centro of great importance, from the fact that it is the junction of the great arterial railway lines of the North Island. Its convenience as a residential centro for the commercial man is enlarged upon, as it would enable , him to work all districts, north, south, east, and west, with case, and without a lot of dead railway travelling. The Government are now greatly extending the station accommodation at Mar, ton, but the opening up of the country on tho Main _ Trunk Line will, it is claimed, , in timo necessitate Marton Junction being made a great railway centre. The auctioneers recommend the purchase of sections, and state that the terms of sale will suit everybody; The auctioneers will forward plans to any intending i purchasers, and .will answer the fullest enquiries.
