The barquentino Countess of Errol, -which left Newcastle, on September 25, arrived at. Wellington yesterday morning, after a rough voyage across. She has a cargo of 250 ions of coal, consigned to U. 11. Barber and Co. Ordinary weather was experienced by Dm Countess of Errol during the first throe days out from Newcastle. On tho fourth day a heavy south-west gale was encountered. While the storm was raging, the vessel's lifeboat was carried away, somo bulwarks smashed, and much minor damage was done. The weather conditions improved, and all went well until October 11, when in sight of Stephen's Maud, a westerly gale overtook the ship. Shu ran through tho Straits and sheltered behind Capo Campbell on Saturday. A fruitless attempt to enter Wellington Harbour was made on Sunday, when another north-west gale came on and forced the vessel to retreat to shelter again. When returning to Cape Campbell tho second time, sho pooped a heavy sea, which smashed in the skylight and Hooded the cabin ■ A ..southerly wind on Monday night enabled Iha ship to leave shelter and make for Wellington. As was previously reported, the Countess of Errol has been purchased by tho Westpbrt Coal Company. On discharging her cargo ' she will be dismantled and converted into a coal hulk. During the voyago from Newcastlo the ship was perfectly watertight.
WEST COAST WEATHER. . The shipping arrangements on the West Coast are greatly hampered through the continuous heavy weather experienced there latoly. The Union Company received advico yesterday that tlie fresh in Westport River showed no signs of decreasing, and that there was a heavy sou running on tho bar, making it unworkable, lleports from Greymouth at fl a.m.. yesterday stated 'that the weather had changed for the better, but .as there was a heavy fresh in the river, and tho bar was unworkable, the departure of the Kotuku and Mapourika on this afternoon's-tide was doubtful. Among the local vessels that are barbound at Westport are the Anchor Lino steamers Charles Edward, Waverley, and Alexauder. . .When the Mapourika gets across the Greyniouth bar sho will proceed to Westport, pick up the Arahura's passengers and returning to Greyniouth with them. Thiswili enable the Arahura to miss her call at Grovniouth, and return from Westport to Wellington via Nelson and Picton. Advice has been received of the departure from Sydney, on-October ]5, of tho Haliamuhirc, for Auckland. She is duo at Welliii"ton on Sunday, October 27. • " Messrs. Levin advise that the Wakaht was to leave Lyttelton for Kaikoura and Wellington last night. The heavy weather prevailing will prevent her working the stations on the coast, Tho s.s. St. Qucntin left Newcastle on October • 13, for the west coast ports of South America, via Wellington, with a cargo of coal. Sho is duo here to-morrow to replenish her bunkers. The Queen of the 'South, after being barbound nt Foxton for some days, loft that port at 2 p.m. yesterday for Wellington. Tho "Marlborough Express" reports that the kctcli Pet is ashore near Air. Turner's place, "ifciveiiscliffe," Queen Charlotte Sound The vessel left Wellington in ballast early on Wednesday morning last for Pelorus Sound there to load timber. She mado Queen Charlotte Sound on Wednesday evening, a strong north-easterly gale blowing at tho time. She ran into the Sound for shelter, and in trying to secure an anchorage was blown on to the rocks, ■••.■here she now lies with her noso in the water' Captain D. Boimer and the other man on board endeavoured to signal the Tiitnnckai on Thursday, but were unsuccessful. When the Elsie came along on Friday morning she picked the men. up and. conveyed them to Picton. if the weather keeps fine, there may bo some shance of saving the vessel, but her position is none too favourable. She is owned by 'Mr. George Snug, of Wellington, and isof2t tons register. She has made several trips to lilenlieiin with timber. . The voyage was (o have been Captain lionner's last with the Vet, as hj intended leaving her when ho got hack to Wellington.
AERTVAL OF THE OI3ERON. The four-inastcd barqueiitinc Oberon, after a passage of 12G days from Liverpool, arrived in the, stream about 10 p.m. last night, she is under charier to the Griicie, J3eazley Company, wliosr agents at Wellington are Johnston and Company. The Obornn is under the command of Captain A. Smith, who was here about ten years ago in command of the Glninis. The cnr;?o comprises 133!) tons of general merchandise for discharge at Wellington, and 771 tons for Uuiipijin. During tho trip out the Oberon experienced very poor N.E. and •>.!•!. trade winds, and moderate to strong west and north-west weather. The vessel made a very long voyage of 15 days from the
Snares, during which a succession of westerly Kales were encountered. Tlic Obcron throiiprhoiit the heavy weather behaved splendidly. .She signalled for a pilot at 7.35 p.m., and Pilot Hayward went nut in the Duco, amr sailed her to an anchorage in the stronni. The assistance ot the tug was not required as a fair wind prevailed. The Olieron, oil completing discharging at Wellington, proceeds to Duncdin. METEOROLOGICAL.
