TRADES AND LABOUR COUNCIL. * ' / The Trades and Labour Council met last evening in the Trades Hall. About forty-five delegates were present. A letter was received from the Nelson Council endorsing tho Parliamentary Committee's manifesto re the Arbitration Court. A resolution was passed condemning speculation in land, and recommending that a heavy tax bo plucetl on those areas which were held for speculative purposes. It was reported that a shearers' union had been formed at Huntervillo, and had now over 120 mombors on. its roll. The union has laid certain domnmls before tho employers, who will hold a conference next week to consider the question.' Tho Clerk of Awards has intimated to the Council of the various unions that no case of enforcement of awards, or of original disputes, filed after September 12, would bo heard at tho forthcoming sitting of the Arbitration Court. Delegates tpok strong exception to this practice of shutting out cases, and pointed out that us tho Court did not sit hero till the end of November cases which had been filed during the latter end of September or October would not bo dealt with for four or five months. The Council disapproved of tho action of the Defence Department in calling out the Volunteers on Labour Day.
