DUNEDIN, This Day. SIR WILLIAM FRASER RETIRES Sir William Fraser will not be a candidate for any scat at the general election. Hon. W. F. Massey has issued the Governments policy programme for the electors. Twenty-seven points are mentioned. The school sports on Saturday were cut short by rain, Mr A. G. Clarke, secretary of the Oamaru Repatriation Board, disappeared on Saturday afternoon, leaving letters indicating he intended ending his life, adding that only family reasons tempted him. He had served on Gallipoli and was badly wounded. He came from Auckland. Leonard Hammond, a garage manager, Auckland, was killed by being struck by a heavy piece of hardwood thrown by a circular saw. In the House of Representatives, Sir Joseph Ward declared that the cessation of the through train from Christchurch to Invercargill was not due to a coal shortage, which had nothing to do with it. The break at Dunedin was because the Minister wanted the mail service earned to his electorate. Sir Wm, Fraser did not realise he was the Minister referred to, and says the express was taken oft' before he knew anything about it. London, October 11th, Two thousand lives were lost by the wreck of an unnamed British ship on the Norwegian coast. The King and Queen of the Belgians have arrived in California, A drought throughout the Transvaal and Midlands of Cape Colony is assuming a grave aspect. Stock is dying wholesale and crops are imperilled. The Fiume situation is increasing in gravity. The Italian army is in revolt. It marched on Fiume and the revolt might result in a revolution. The King threatens to abdicate if sedition continues. It is reported .That German and Russian forces have, occupied Riga. It is declared the attack was accompanied by asphyxiating gas. /The British believe the Germans intend to march on Petrograd and proclaim themselves saviours of Russia. Serious fighting is reported from Petrograd, where counter-revolutionaries have occupied several important buildings.

THE WAKATIBU SEAT. (Special to Argus.) Wellington, This D-iy. Sir William Fraser has definitely decided nub to contest the Wakatipu seat at the General Election. Sir Joseph Ward has made strong representations to Mr James Horn, who contested the seat in 1911, to again come forward. In the event of Mr Horn’s acceptance the local candidate (Rev W, P. Rankin) will stand down. Representation has been made by Sir Joseph Ward to the loeal candidate to contest the Bruce seat, and this is at present under consideration. MOUNT PISA LAND. The purchase of Mount Pisa run, as urged by loeal residents, is under consideration to-day. The outlook, on the lines suggested by the soldiers committee is favorable.
