CHRISTMAS FESTIVAL.
CHILDREN'S GATHERING. The Oddfellows' Hall was packed on Tuesday night, on the occasion of the annual festival and Christmas tree entertainment arranged I>y. the local Methodist Church, and 'Rev. S. J. Werren and his co-workers are to 'be congratulated on the success of the gathering. The first part of the programme consisted of two anthems by the children, a large choir being under the able direction of Mr B-. Jory. In fine style they rendered "Christmas Echoes" and "Happy New Year." Dorothy Sinclair gave a suitable recitation and W. Robertson a song. A 'band of children trained and guided by Miss Grant, gave the Maypole dance with credit to themselves and their teacher, and the actions of the children among the anany ribbons were very good. One of the best items was a sailor's 'hornpipe by Grade Cameron, and she had to respond to an undeniable encore. A number of children gave as a easte a Christmas scene, and it was well performed. The second part of the programme was the most enthusiastic. In a eorner near the stage a large Christmas tree, well laden, with toys, had been built up, and during the concert part of the entertainment had been the object of many envious eyes. Suddenly tie main floors of the hall were opened and Santa Claus and a lady Santa Clans entered 1 in a motor car. The car was well decorated, and so were the passengers; The reception was deafening, the children cheering, and the horn was- blown long and loud as the car was driven to the front of the stage. The distribution of toys then started, and a number of assistants were kept hard at work for about a ■couple of hours. Over 400 toys were given away, and every attempt made to make sure that no child received more than one gift. The children were excited, and the adults spent tt pleasant time watching the children having a real good night's entertainment. Mr F. (Anderson and Miss Violet Stewart, as Santa Glaus,, helped .conin the evening's fun.
