TAWANUI.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) .A meeting was held in the Tawanui School on Monday evening, 22nd inst, to arrange for a concert to lie held in aid of the prize fund of the school. I here was a good attendance of parcuts, and much enthusiasm was displayed. Mr T. F. O'Conneil was voted to the chair, and explained the obiect of the meeting. After some discussion it was decided to hold ij, picnic in conjunction with the concert, both events taking place on Friday, Dec. 17th. The following were elected a committee :—Messrs Hickcy, hmg, Fdwards, Lumsclen, Howard, Young, Jenkins, Cooper, and O'Conneil (secretary). The annual inspection of the school was held on the .oth inst., Dr Don being the inspector. At the conclusion ot the examination he expressed himself as being pleased with the general character of the work done, while the manners of the children were very good. It is his intention to recommend to the Education Board that an assistant teacher be appointed, as the number of children on the roll (03.) was too many for one teacher to (leal with.
The material for the platelayer's cottage, to be erected at Papatupu, is now on the ground, and a start is to be made immediately with erection of same.
A chopping contest was held on the roadside in this locality recently, whorJ I believe there was a very largo number of spectators, who watched with interest the efforts of some half-do/.en axemen to "hew" through their logs, in record time. However, no records or axe-handles were broken. Thq contest was' won by Crilly, with Meek a good second; it is said the latter would have won had not there been a knot in his log,
