BALCLUTHA D.H. SCHOOL.

The monthly meeting of the school committee was held in the Borough Chambers on Wednesday evening.' Present -Messrs A. McDonald (chairman). 0. Coo-hill (clerk), T. A. Johnston, 0. Watt, and (i. W. Wood. Mr James Rodger, the Education Board's architect, forwarded sketch plan of proposed Cadets' drill hall, the estimated cost of which was £353 11/. This was more than" he anticipated, but it might be possible, to reduce it.--The plan showed a brick building, 55R by 25ft.— Resolved to thank Mr .Rodger for his kindness, and to as!; in what respect the Cost might be cut down to .£3OO. RECTOR'S REPORT. The Rector (Mr McElrea) reported as follows : "For the lour weeks ending Nov.* 20, the attendance in the Primary Department was 289, 288, 287, 291, out of a weekly roll of about 3'15. For the Secondary Department the ati tendance averages 30.

"The report of the Board's inspectors came to hand the day after the committee last mot, and is submitted, ton-other with Assistant InspectorGeneral Gill's report, for your consideration.

"The committee will fix the holidays. Thursday, the 23rd, has been suggested as break-up day. Most parents like to have the holidays after Christmas as far as possible. • "'Tlie janitor suggests getting in the kindling wood for the winter to dry. Our supply of old wood is nearly out.

"While in puu'edin looking out prize books, i was struck with thq very line collection of suitable books' that were being opened up, and with) the permission of your chairman 1 selected about three pounds' worth. Being early, i had a better chance of making a good selection. On your approval the books will be put on the shelves.

"The chimneys and door-steps were attended to, but owing to a break in the weather not ipiite completed. "The asphalting at the back of the residence, agreed to some time ago. could now be gone on with as far as the ground is concerned." < committee approved of Mr McElrea's action,- in the purchase of librarv book*.

THE PRIZE-GKI.VG. It was agreed ithat the break-up take place on Thursday, Dec. 23rd. Mr .Johnston spoke in favour of the Oddfellows' Hall being taken for the prize-giving. To have this in the school was very unsatisfactory, and did not afford the parents an opportunity of seeing the various pupils and prize-giving. JJ e moved that the break-up take place in the Oddfellows' Hall.

Mr Wood and Mr Watt cordially supported the motion, which was earned.
