THE LATE ALEXANDER SUTHERLAND
An old and respected resident in the Te iiouka district passed uway on Tuesday night, in the person of Mr Alexander Sutherland. tie was born iu the year ISHS in the parish of Lu- | tliei'ou, Caithness, Scotland, and was | thy second son of Mr William Suthcr- , land of Shinvale. He was brought, up : to the farming industry, and followed j that occupation till the death of ' his father in IM>7. lie then decided j to come to New Zealand to, join his brothers and sisters, who had some years previously emigrated to. the colony. Accompanied by his mot ler and a niece (now Mrs lOdward Shepherd, of Tapanui) lie arrived in the colony by the William Davie (Captain j .Logan) landing at* Port Chalmers in i October ISIiS, )u; came out to the CluI tha District and resided with his bro- | ther John at Te iiouka for some time. . The following year he purchased the j larin of Muvbank from Mr Win. Hope, and here he remained until his death. Deceased was a true specimen of the. Highland gentleman, and wus highly respected by the whole community. He was a prominent figure at Cnledoniun Sports and Highland, gatherings and was an admirer and judge of the Highland costume and bagpipe music, lie, was also a prominent member of the now defunct Gaelic Society of Balclutlia. along with the late John McDonald, merchant, ( Ualcluthu, the late Malcolm Morrison, Kttitungatu, ond the late Donald Campbell, Hill end, who were his intimate friends. They formed a strong society, but one b\ one its members passed uway until it dwindled down to a few members and became defunct. Mr Sutherland took very little interest in politics. lit- was a man of splendid physique and enjoyed perfect health until three years ago, when lie was attacked by an internal complaint, passing away peacefully on Tuesday night, after jong suffering borne with Christian fortitude. Deceased, who was ill his (»!Hh year, was never married, and leaves behind tiim two brothers—Douuld (Wuiwcru), and John, | Riverside), and one unmarried sister, Christina, who kept house for liitn, his two other sisters j re deceased him by a few years, j The late Sir Sutherland was a shrewd j observer of men and things, honour | able and unright in his dealing's, ob- | liging' and neighbourly. He was held in high esteem by all with whom he j came in contact, and his death remo | ves a respected personality and famil- ! iar form from our midst. His remains j will be interred in the Halelutlia cemetery this afternoon.
