POPOTUNOA GORGE.

[From Our Own Coivrespondknt.] Tho unmetalled roads are very badly in need of surfacing. They were very badly cut up in the winter time, and now that they are hard and dry old wheel tracks are great trenches- 1 , in some places up to the axles. A few days of a surfaceman or the road grader would make a great improvement. Will the powers that be take the hint. The crops and grass are sorely in need, of rain, and if it does not come soon it will be too late to do much good. We had a comparatively early spring, but the want of rain has neutralised its effects. The lambing is showing a very fair percentage all over. We arc still without a school here. It was within our grasp some Lime ago, but the same question —the question of site — was the stumbling block. If it was put in a certain place so-and sos-children would not come to it, and vice verxa. It is bard to suit every one, but it is a pity when the requisite number of children are in the locality that their parents cannot come to some understanding as to a site. Some of the families live seven miles from Clinton, which is the nearest school, and as a consequence they have to take houses in Clinton to get schooling. Some of the children actually walk five miles to Clinton and five miles back every day. Its killing work for the children. Prospects from a farmer's point of view are no better here than they are any where else. But we are all looking forward to great results from tho " cheap money for farmers."
