Schnapps out

PA Auckland The Promising stayer, Schnapps, is unlikely to race again this season after cracking a cannon bone at Ellerslie on Tuesday. The highly-regarded Three Legs mare, prepared at Matamata by Dave and Paul O’Sullivan, broke down over the concluding stages of the Jaguar Cup (2400 m in which she started favourite. On first inspection it was thought the four-year-old had hurt the frog in the sole of her off-foreleg, but an X-ray has revealed a crack to the cannon bone. The injury should not stop her returning to the racetrack, but will put her out of commission for at least a month. “Her return to racing will take some time,” Paul O’Sullivan said. “If we’re lucky she could be back in work in five weeks. “She could well miss the rest of the season, but we’re prepared to wait on her. She has got a lot in front of her — we rate her very, very highly.”
