Trackwork
Awapuni Awapuni correspondent Noel Eales, still in the clouds after Lomondy’s great win in the Manawatu Cup, will parade a team of four at the Hawke’s Bay meeting at Hastings tomorrow and the quartet all came through final gallops in fine style at Awapuni yesterday morning.
The star of the Hawke’s Bay team is sprinter Grandstand, which will be having her first start since racing at Riccarton in November. Vanessa Liley, who. has won two races on the grey, will combine with her again in the Best Travel Sprint, in which Grandstand will be carrying 52.5 kg, a weight which should make her an outstanding prospect.
Grandstand worked on the plough, running 800 m in 51s, the last 600 m with plenty in hand in 38s. She has freshened well since her southern trip. Cutter and Springboard left 1000 m behind in 1:4, the last 600 m in 38.65, and they finished together. Cutter broke through for a win at Wanganui last week, doing the job well enough to suggest he will be a top chance in the Beamish Mile on Friday, while Springboard has the form to suggest he will go close in the Super Liquorman Maiden.
Gai Gem ran an even gallop over 1200 m, taking 1:19, the 600 m in 40s. She was hopeless in the ground here on Saturday and will have to be kept on side for the Tourist Kelt Welter,
