Some clearways to go

Clearways in Colombo Street south will be removed for a trial three months. The Christchurch City Council last evening decided to remove those on the west side of the street between St AsajSh Street and Hereford Street and on the east side between Tuam Street and Lichfield Street. Some councillors believed congestion would follow the plearway lifting. Cr Alex Clark

predicted problems with buses pulling out into traffic. Cr Morgan Fahey said 43 extra car-parks would be freed by the removal of the clearways. This would encourage more shoppers into the city centre, he said. Several councillors were opposed to the removal but the council voted 15 to 9 in favour. The trial begin today.
